How to identify your Mr-Glass door without guessing: pull the sliding panel back about two feet, get low, and look at the bottom edge. The cartridge style uses either a 1-inch or 1-1/4-inch diameter wheel, and that quarter-inch difference is the most common compatibility mistake we see. Measure the wheel with a caliper, not a tape measure. If the original tag is still on the glass, look for “MG” followed by the series number in the corner marking; if that tag is long gone, the wheel measurement plus the frame corner profile is sufficient for us to identify the correct replacement.

• Door takes real effort to move. Worn roller wheels stop turning and start skidding on the track, which compounds the wear quickly. In coastal air, the steel axles inside the roller cartridge corrode and freeze even faster.
• Door lifts as you pull, then drops. That lifting motion tells you the roller housing has play in it, usually from a collapsed bearing retainer. The door is no longer riding on wheels; it is riding on the housing edge.
• Scraping or grinding noise along the bottom. Metal-on-metal contact between the roller housing and the track. This is past the point of adjustment and into replacement territory.
• Handle sticks, twists, or will not engage the lock. The interior lock mechanism, usually a small mortise assembly at the handle height, wears down its internal pawls. Older Mr-Glass handles used a cast zinc mechanism that corroders badly in humidity.
• Door binds at the top or catches the jamb mid-slide. Settlement or a failing upper guide rail throws the top of the panel out of alignment, and a misaligned panel kills a new set of rollers faster than anything else.

What we do not recommend is removing the sliding panel yourself. A full-size Mr-Glass glass panel with insulated or impact glass runs 150 to 250 pounds, and once it comes out of the top track, it has to come down in a controlled motion. It goes wrong fast and the glass is the most expensive part of the door.
