CWS Window Replacement: The Plantation Owner’s Guide

We replace CWS windows in Plantation regularly, and most jobs run between $850 and $1,800 installed depending on the window size, frame condition, and glass package. We stock the common CWS replacement sashes, balances, and weatherstripping on our trucks, so a straightforward swap is often completed the same day we diagnose it. Homeowners usually find us after a window stops lifting, a latch stops catching, or a bedroom starts sweating between the panes where the seal has let go.

CWS built a lot of windows into Broward County homes during the 1990s and 2000s. Those units are now hitting the age where the balances wear out, the corner gaskets shrink, and the sash welds start to fail. If you are in Plantation and the window still looks fine from the street but fights you when you open it, the problem is almost always a part, not the whole frame. That is the distinction we make on every service call before we talk about replacing anything.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS windows came through several series over the years: the single-hung 1000 series, the builder-grade 2000 series, and the heavier 3000 series used in some of the Plantation country club communities. Each series uses a different balance system and sash thickness, and the parts do not swap between them. We match by the sticker on the top of the sash if it is still legible, or by measuring the balance shoe, the sash profile, and the glass thickness when the sticker is gone.

The OEM versus aftermarket decision matters with CWS more than with most lines. CWS stopped manufacturing under that name years ago, so true OEM parts are now leftover inventory that gets harder to find each season. We carry quality aftermarket balances, pivot bars, shoes, and corner keys matched to the original engineering tolerances, and we also keep a limited supply of recovered OEM sashes for the 2000 series which was the most common in Plantation. We are an independent service provider and not affiliated with CWS, which is why we match on dimension and spec rather than brand name alone.

One compatibility gotcha we see often: the 2000 series balance shoe comes in two widths, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch, and a 2000 series from one year of production may not fit the same series from another. We measure the shoe before we quote, because installing the wrong width scratches the track and the window will bind again within a week. The original 2000 series sashes in Florida also fail along the bottom rail weld after fifteen to twenty years of sun and humidity, and a replacement sash built to the same daylight opening is often cheaper and longer-lasting than repairing the welded corners.

Signs Your CWS Window Replacement Is Failing

  • Sash drops or will not stay open. The balance system inside the side jambs has lost tension. On CWS units this is usually a worn balance spring or a cracked shoe, and you will feel the window suddenly get heavier about halfway up.
  • Fogged glass or moisture between the panes. The insulating glass seal has failed. In South Florida humidity, once that seal lets go the only real fix is replacing the sash or the IGU. If it lists and it is white or gray residue at the bottom of the glass, the seal has been gone for a while.
  • Lock or latch will not engage. The sash has settled out of square or the keeper is worn. On older Plantation homes, the settling slab shifts the frame just enough that the original cam lock no longer reaches. This is a replacement part problem, not a reason to replace the window.
  • Drafts at the meeting rail or along the sides. The weatherstripping and corner gaskets have hardened and shrunk in the Florida heat. CWS used vinyl bulb seals that lose their flex after ten to fifteen years, and once they are flat they will not spring back.
  • Visible cracking at the sash corners or tilt latches that snap off. The vinyl becomes brittle with UV exposure and the stress points fail. A cracked corner on a tilt-in sash is a safety concern because the sash can come apart when you least expect it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical single-hung CWS replacement sash with a new balance system in Plantation, installed pricing runs from $850 to $1,200. A larger picture window or a custom size can push that to $1,400 to $1,800, especially where we need to order a cut-to-size IGU rather than a stocked sash. What drives the range is mostly the width: anything over 36 inches tends to grow out of the common warehouse stock and into custom fabrication.

Every quote we give for CWS replacement includes the parts, the labor, disposal of the old sash, and registration of the new glass warranty. We do not leave surprise line items for shims, sealant, or carting. You will see the numbers written down before we touch the frame, and the price does not move once we start. This falls under the same Done Right Promise we put on every job: if the window is not square, level, and in writing, it is not done.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the sticker on the sash, measure the glass daylight opening, and note whether the window tilts in or lifts out. Those details help us quote over the phone. You should not try to replace a CWS balance yourself. The spiral and block-and-tackle systems are under tension, and releasing the wrong one in a tilted sash can send the sash out of your hands and through the glass. We have seen the result of that more than once in Plantation kitchens.

If the window is fogged, do not try the drill-and-refill fix. It does not work in our humidity and it voids whatever is left of the gas fill warranty. If the window still functions and the frame is sound, a replacement sash or balance is usually a half-day job for us. If the frame is rotted at the sill or the rough opening is out of square, that is a different conversation and we would rather show you than sell you. Call (772) 577-2915 and we will walk you through what we need to know.
